Cultivating Gratitude

The beginning of this month was tough with storm Sandy, both super storm and my own personal storm, adding to the challenging pace of life. Struggling to maintain my balance between mother, wife, teacher, massage therapist and business owner. Slipping away from my own practice and come dangerously close to burnout. I had lost my attitude for gratitude!

I needed to get back to my truth and my joy. I started by reinstating my morning meditation and devoting my attention to gratitude. Appreciating the gifts of positive people and energy that surround me daily. The effects were immediate, creating a shift in perspective. I have so much to be grateful for! There is a whole science around gratitude and happiness called positive psychology. Long ago I discovered in a book and adopted PMA (positive mental attitude) as a mission. Not in the form of denial but from a conscious choice. We can go through our life looking at all the negatives or we can focus on what's positive. Growing and learning from the life experiences that make you uniquely you!

Gratitude is so Very Yogic! Intention is everything! Where we put our attention manifests and expands. Cultivating gratitude is the secret to real happiness. Check out my favorite books REAL Happiness and Loving Kindness, by Sharon Salzberg. In gratitude we begin to change ourselves biologically by rewiring our neuron network effecting DNA on a cellular level. Filling each cell with appreciation and love!

To adopt an attitude of gratitude! Spend a few minutes each day reflecting on what you are grateful for in your life. Notice how gratitude effects your being and how it effects your perspective of the world and people around you. Let your yoga practice start with attention on what your are grateful for in yourself and on your yoga mat. It can be as simple as feeling grateful for your breath. Experiment and see how gratitude ripples off your mat and into your world. Who knows how far the ripples will go?

I am so honored and grateful to be serving my community and sharing my truth with all of you. I am grateful for you, the community who make up the soul of River Rock Yoga. For your willingness, curiosity and warrior courage you bring to your yoga mats, exploring your edges and courageously jumping into the unchartered territory within you.

Today, I am grateful for the beauty of nature, spirit of the trees and the vastness of the sky, the power of a storm coming in over the ocean and the calm afterwards, family and friends, good food, quiet, dancing, adventures and the list goes on and on...
